Is Teachable’s $29 plan really the cheapest way to sell a course? Sometimes. Teachable pricing in 2026 starts at $29 a month billed yearly, but that plan takes 7.5% of every sale. Once you sell more than about $533 a month, the “cheap” plan becomes the expensive one.

Below are all of Teachable’s plans as of 3 November 2026, the exact point where you should upgrade, and what changed this year.

A note on students. Some older reviews say Starter is limited to 100 students. Teachable’s pricing page no longer shows student caps. Plans are limited by products only.

Starter vs Builder: when the fee costs more than the upgrade

This is the one decision that matters on Teachable. Builder costs $40 a month more than Starter on yearly billing. Starter takes 7.5% of your sales. So the question is simple: is 7.5% of your sales more than $40?

Line chart: Teachable Starter at $29 plus 7.5% crosses Builder at $69 when monthly sales reach $533
Above $533 a month in sales, Builder is cheaper than Starter.

The math: $40 ÷ 7.5% = $533. Below that, Starter wins. Above it, Builder wins, and the gap grows with every sale.

Your monthly sales Starter cost Builder cost Cheaper
$300 $29 + $22.50 = $51.50 $69 Starter
$533 $29 + $40 = $69 $69 Even
$1,000 $29 + $75 = $104 $69 Builder
$3,000 $29 + $225 = $254 $69 Builder

Billed yearly. Card processing (about 2.9% + 30¢) is extra on both and left out.

From my client work

A language tutor I helped last year stayed on Starter for eight months “to save money”. When we added up her fees, she had paid Teachable about $1,100 in transaction fees on roughly $1,800 a month in sales.

Builder would have cost her $320 more in plan fees over those months. She lost hundreds of dollars by trying to save $40 a month. She upgraded the same day.

Builder or Growth: it comes down to products

Once you are past the $533 line, the next choice is Builder or Growth. Both take 0% with teachable:pay. Neither caps students. The difference is how many products you can sell: 10 on Builder, 50 on Growth.

Growth costs $70 a month more on yearly billing. That is $840 a year for 40 more product slots. Every course, coaching offer or download you sell uses a slot. So count what you sell today and what you plan to add this year.

  • Up to 10 products: stay on Builder.
  • 11 to 50 products: Growth, or bundle smaller items so you fit in 10.
  • More than 50, or a team: talk to Teachable about a custom plan.

What Teachable really costs: three real setups

1. A first course selling about $300 a month

Starter, billed yearly: $29 plus $22.50 in fees, so $51.50 a month. Card processing comes on top. This is the right plan while you test your idea.

2. A tutor selling about $1,800 a month

On Starter, she pays $29 plus $135 in fees, or $164 a month. On Builder, she pays a flat $69. Builder saves $95 a month, or $1,140 a year. This is the situation in my client story above.

3. An online school with 15 products

Builder allows 10, so this school needs Growth at $139 a month billed yearly, or $1,668 a year. Add an email tool and the full setup is about $156 to $172 a month at 1,000 subscribers.

What changed at Teachable in 2026

  1. Starter $29, Builder $69, Growth $139 billed yearly. Products, not students, set the limits.

  2. Teachable dropped its free plan. You now start with a 7-day free trial, plus a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Monthly vs yearly

  • Starter: $39 vs $29. Yearly saves $120.
  • Builder: $89 vs $69. Yearly saves $240.
  • Growth: $189 vs $139. Yearly saves $600.

What Teachable does not include

Teachable is built for courses and coaching products. It is not a full email marketing tool. If you want newsletters and sales sequences, you will likely add one. At 1,000 subscribers, Kit Creator is $33 a month billed yearly and MailerLite is about $17. That puts a realistic Builder setup at around $86 to $102 a month.

Is Teachable worth it?

Teachable is worth it for creators who sell a handful of courses or coaching products and want no student limits. Builder at $69 a month billed yearly takes no fee on sales, which makes it fair value once you sell steadily.

Starter is the plan to be careful with. At $29 it looks like the cheapest real course platform. But its 7.5% fee is one of the highest we track. Only Skool Hobby, at 10%, takes more. Above $533 a month in sales, Starter costs more than Builder. Above about $1,520 a month, it costs more than Kajabi Basic.

The other gap is email. Teachable does not replace an email marketing tool, so plan on $17 to $33 more a month at 1,000 subscribers. With that added, Builder plus email is still cheaper than Kajabi or Thinkific with email. My advice: start on Starter only while sales are small, and set a reminder to move to Builder the month you pass $533.

Good fit

  • Just starting, small sales: Starter
  • Steady sales over $533/mo: Builder
  • You want no student caps
Look elsewhere

  • You need email built in
  • You sell many small products
  • You mainly want a community

How to pay less for Teachable

  • Pay yearly. It saves about 22%, or $240 a year on Builder.
  • Upgrade at $533, not later. Each month above that line on Starter costs you money for nothing.
  • Bundle small items. Three short mini-courses sold as one bundle can use one product slot and keep you on a cheaper plan.
  • Use teachable:pay on Builder and up. The 0% fee depends on it.
  • Test inside the trial and guarantee. You get a 7-day free trial and a 30-day money-back guarantee. Build and launch a small test inside that window.

How we checked these prices

I checked teachable.com/pricing on 3 November 2026 as a US visitor and recorded each plan’s yearly and monthly price, its fee and its product limit. The page no longer shows student caps, which is why we say plans are limited by products only. The free plan’s removal and the 7-day trial also come from Teachable’s own pages.
