Is Kit (formerly ConvertKit) free? Yes, up to 10,000 subscribers. That is one of the most generous free plans in email marketing. But the free plan allows only one automation and one email sequence. The moment you want to sell with email, you will look at Kit pricing for Creator, from $33 a month billed yearly.
I checked Kit’s pricing page on 3 November 2026. Here is every plan at every list size we could verify, and the point where paying makes sense.
Kit plans and prices in 2026
Kit prices go up with your list size. Here is what we verified:
| Subscribers | Free | Creator (yearly) | Creator (monthly) | Pro (yearly) | Pro (monthly) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1,000 | $0 | $33 | $39 | $66 | $79 |
| 5,000 | $0 | $65.83 | $79 | $132.50 | $159 |
| 10,000 | $0 | $92.50 | $111 | Check Kit | Check Kit |
Per month, US dollars. Source: kit.com/pricing, checked 3 Nov 2026. Pro at 10,000 was not verified. Kit was running a first-year discount on Pro on 3 Nov; we show the regular price.

What the free plan really gives you
Kit’s free plan is real, not a trial. You can send newsletters to up to 10,000 people for $0. But it has firm limits:
- One visual automation and one email sequence
- Kit branding on your emails and forms
- No app integrations (so no direct link to your course platform)
For a weekly newsletter, that is plenty. For a sales funnel, it is not. A typical course launch uses a welcome sequence, a lead magnet sequence and a sales sequence. That is three, and the free plan allows one.
Creator vs Pro: which one you need
Creator is the plan most people buy. It adds unlimited automations and sequences, removes the limits above, and connects to your other tools. Pro roughly doubles the price and adds advanced features for bigger teams and lists.
- You sell courses or coaching
- You need a few automated funnels
- You work alone or with one helper
- You run a large newsletter business
- You need advanced reporting
- Several people work in the account
A podcast host I advised stayed on Kit’s free plan for a year and reached about 5,000 subscribers. Smart. She paid nothing while she grew.
When she launched her first paid workshop, she upgraded to Creator for the month of the launch only. It cost her $79 that month on monthly billing. Then she stayed, because the sales emails paid for it many times over.
The signs you have outgrown the free plan
Kit’s free plan has no subscriber pressure until 10,000. So the push to pay comes from features, not size. Here are the moments I see most often:
- You want a second sequence. A freebie sequence plus a welcome sequence is already two. The free plan allows one.
- You start selling. Sales emails work best when they react to clicks and tags. That needs more than one automation.
- You want your tools to talk. Without integrations, a buyer on your course platform will not be tagged in Kit. You end up copying lists by hand.
- The branding starts to bother you. On paid plans, the Kit badge goes away.
If none of these apply yet, stay free. There is no prize for paying early.
What Kit costs per 1,000 subscribers
Kit gets cheaper per person as you grow. On Creator, billed yearly:
| List size | Creator, yearly | Cost per 1,000 subscribers | Per year |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1,000 | $33/mo | $32.50 | $390 |
| 5,000 | $65.83/mo | $13.17 | $790 |
| 10,000 | $92.50/mo | $9.25 | $1,110 |
Our arithmetic from Kit’s prices on 3 Nov 2026. Yearly totals rounded to the dollar.
That drop matters. Going from 1,000 to 10,000 subscribers multiplies your list by ten but your bill by less than three. Growth on Kit is cheap once you are paying.
What Kit really costs: three real setups
1. A weekly newsletter with 3,000 readers
$0. One welcome sequence, one weekly email, no sales funnel. The free plan covers this fully. Many writers stay here for years.
2. A coach selling one program to 1,000 subscribers
Creator, billed yearly: $390 a year. You get unlimited sequences for your freebie, your sales emails and your onboarding. Your course platform can tag buyers automatically.
3. A creator with 10,000 subscribers and several products
Creator, billed yearly: $1,110 a year. On monthly billing it is $1,332. Most people at this size still do not need Pro unless a team shares the account.
A trick for your first launch
You do not have to commit to a year. Kit bills monthly too. If you are on the free plan and plan one launch, you can upgrade to Creator on monthly billing for the launch, then decide.
At 5,000 subscribers, that month costs $79. If the launch makes one sale of a $100 product, the month has paid for itself. Build your sequences during the 14-day trial so the paid month is all selling, not setup.
Monthly vs yearly billing
Kit’s yearly discount is about 15 to 17%:
- Creator at 1,000: $39 vs $33 ($390 a year). Kit says yearly saves $78.
- Creator at 5,000: $79 vs $65.83. Yearly saves about $158.
- Creator at 10,000: $111 vs $92.50. Yearly saves $222.
How to pay less for Kit
- Clean your list before you upgrade. Kit prices by subscriber count. Removing people who have not opened in months can drop you a tier.
- Switch to yearly once you are sure. At 5,000 subscribers it saves about $158 a year.
- Do not buy Pro for one feature. Pro costs about double Creator. Ask whether the one feature you want is worth $33 or more a month.
- Watch for first-year offers on Pro. Kit was running one when we checked. Read the renewal price before you accept.
How Kit compares with other email tools
At 1,000 subscribers, billed yearly, per month:
Cheapest plan that allows real automations, 1,000 subscribers
Billed yearly. Verified 3–4 Nov 2026.
MailerLite is cheaper. Kit costs more but its free plan is far bigger (10,000 vs 250 subscribers), and many creators prefer its simple, writer-friendly editor. See MailerLite pricing and beehiiv pricing.
Is Kit worth paying for?
Kit’s real strength is the path it gives you. You can start for $0 with up to 10,000 subscribers, which no other tool we track comes close to. Then you pay only when email starts making you money. That fits how most creators actually grow.
It is not the cheapest paid plan. At 1,000 subscribers, Kit Creator costs $33 a month billed yearly. MailerLite Comfort costs $17.10 for a similar job. That is about $190 a year more for Kit. You pay that for the easier editor, the creator-focused features and the room to grow without switching tools.
If your budget is tight and you need many automations now, MailerLite is the better deal. If you want to build a newsletter first and sell later, Kit is the one I would pick. Paid newsletters are a different case. There, look at beehiiv.
Stay free while you grow a newsletter. Pay for Creator the day you sell something by email. That one rule covers most people.
How we checked these prices
I checked kit.com/pricing on 3 November 2026 at three list sizes, 1,000, 5,000 and 10,000 subscribers, on both monthly and yearly billing. Kit was showing a first-year discount on Pro that day. We print the regular price, because the discount ends and the regular price is what you pay after. Pro at 10,000 did not load for us, so we left it out.
